Consistency is the Cornerstone of Success

I had a friend who was motivated to compete in an IronMan triathlon. He trained hard, watched his diet, stopped drinking alcohol, and slept eight hours every night. His motivation paid off. He ran his first and only IronMan distance triathlon and he was very proud of himself. He even went out and had the IronMan logo tattooed on his calf.

Six months later he was overweight, drank too much, and had the unhealthiest diet of anyone I know. He was no longer motivated to compete in another IronMan after he had one under his belt and he began to live an unhealthy lifestyle. You would never think he was a person who once completed an IronMan Triathlon. Time has passed and it has been well over a dozen years since he completed that IronMan. There is no indication that he will ever change his ways and engage in healthy living again.

I have another friend who has completed triathlons but not anywhere near IronMan distances. She has never run a marathon either. But for decades she has engaged in a healthy lifestyle. She has a healthy diet and exercises every day. She focuses on all aspects of fitness including her physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. She is in excellent health and is an outstanding role model.

I learned a great lesson from observing the lifestyle of my two friends and realized consistency trumps motivation every time. My first friend’s experience highlights the fleeting nature of motivation when it’s not supported by consistent habits and lifestyle choices. On the other hand, my second friend’s dedication to maintaining a healthy lifestyle demonstrates the power of consistency in achieving long-term well-being.

There is a mantra that states it is better to be consistently good than occasionally great. The concept that consistency trumps motivation resonates deeply in various aspects of life, whether it’s personal fitness, professional success, or even relationships. The mantra encapsulates this idea perfectly.

Coach Nick Saban has said that if you are going to be the best in your industry or within your organization it takes consistency in performance. When you look at the characteristics of top performers and champions the thing that sets them apart is their consistency to work hard, practice, and train. The champions do not train until they get something right. They train until they can’t get it wrong. That type of performance only occurs after consistent effort. Leaders in their profession have learned to train consistently even though that may be not very exciting and even boring at times. These people know it takes years and years of preparation to become an overnight success. Coach Nick Saban’s emphasis on consistency in performance echoes throughout many fields, where champions are made not by occasional bursts of brilliance, but by relentless dedication to consistent effort and improvement.

Rising to the occasion is a fantasy. Military professionals will tell you that military units do not rise to the occasion, rather they perform at their level of training. Motivation does have a place in our lives, but it is the dedication to train consistently that will lead to top-tier performance. The notion that military units perform at their level of training rather than rising to the occasion underscores the importance of consistent preparation and training in achieving success, whether on the battlefield or in any other endeavor.

There is another thing about consistency. One must demonstrate discipline to operate consistently. Discipline is the practice of training oneself to adhere to a set of rules, guidelines, or codes of behavior. Along with consistency, discipline also involves self-control and the ability to make choices that align with long-term goals rather than immediate gratification.

Consistency holds immense value across various aspects of life:

Building Trust: Consistency fosters trust and reliability. When you consistently deliver on your promises, meet deadlines, or behave in a certain manner, others perceive you as dependable and trustworthy.

Progress and Growth: Consistency is key to achieving long-term goals and making progress. Whether it’s learning a new skill, exercising, or pursuing a career, consistent effort over time yields significant results and facilitates personal growth.

Establishing Habits: Consistent actions form habits. By repeating positive behaviors consistently, they become ingrained in your routine, making them easier to maintain and leading to positive outcomes.

Improving Performance: Consistency enhances performance in various areas. Whether it’s in sports, academics, or professional endeavors, regular practice and effort lead to improved skills and outcomes.

Reducing Stress: Consistency provides stability and reduces uncertainty. When you maintain consistency in your routines and behaviors, you minimize unexpected changes and stressors, leading to a more balanced and peaceful life.

Enhancing Reputation: Consistency in your actions, words, and values shapes your reputation. People are more likely to respect and admire individuals who demonstrate consistency in their principles and behavior.

Building Momentum: Consistent effort builds momentum over time. Even small, incremental steps towards a goal, when repeated consistently, accumulate and lead to significant progress and achievements.

Ultimately, motivation may provide the initial spark, but it’s consistency in action that sustains progress, leads to mastery, and drives enduring success. Consistency is the cornerstone of success.
